And yet, many actors default to a vague, generic “Northern” that no longer holds up in contemporary, authentic casting. This overview focuses on how Northern accents differ from their Southern counterparts, and how Manchester, Yorkshire, and Liverpool each function as separate, identifiable systems. You’ll leave with: -Clear melodic and vowel distinctions that separate Northern English accents from Southern British speech and from each other -Tools for choosing specific Northern regional features, rather than defaulting to a blend -Greater confidence delivering specific, grounded Northern sounds that casting can actually place

Rather than leaning into exaggerated “Scottishness,” we’ll build the accent from its real linguistic roots, including the influence of Scots, while avoiding the cartoonish “Groundskeeper Willie” sound that still trips up many actors. We’ll focus on how Scottish speakers actually pronounce, phrase, and move through language, not how pop culture tells us they do. You’ll leave with: -A clear understanding of Scottish pronunciation patterns, vowels, consonants, and how to handle R sounds -Accurate melodic and rhythmic habits that define modern Scottish speech, such as the incredibly important Scottish Vowel Length Rule -Tools for maintaining clarity and control without over-darkening or over-rolling This class is about building a grounded, professional Scottish accent that works for contemporary film, TV, animation, and games.

We’ll focus on the fine-grain details that separate a convincing RP from one that’s technically correct but still reads as American, especially in longer reads or under pressure. You’ll leave with: -Solid, reliable personal take-aways and pitfalls to avoid -Greater awareness of American prosody habits that sneak into RP -Tools for nailing the subtleties of the accent that might go over an American’s head, but that every Brit will hear. This is about tightening what you already have, so your RP doesn’t just sound “good,” but sounds right. Previous RP training required in order to attend.

Actors will learn the basic sounds & melody of Southern speech to provide an auditionable accent and set the baseline for more detailed regional study. While many of the strongest traditional features have softened over time, traces of those influences still remain in contemporary New York speech. In this workshop, we’ll explore how a modern, general New York accent functions today, and how actors can intentionally and tastefully incorporate elements influenced by Jewish, Italian, and Puerto Rican speech patterns when appropriate for a character without slipping into stereotype or pastiche. We’ll also examine which sounds have largely disappeared from everyday New York speech, and which subtle features still signal “New York” in a believable, current way. You’ll leave with: -A clearer understanding of how New York accents developed from ethnic neighborhood influences -Tools for selectively incorporating Jewish-, Italian-, or Puerto Rican–influenced features into a general NY sound -Greater confidence distinguishing modern New York speech from older, more traditional versions This workshop focuses on specificity and choice, helping you create New York characters that feel grounded, contemporary, and culturally aware.

This “fantasy British” sound doesn’t require the precision of RP, but it isn’t random. There are consistent rules, boundaries, and habits that keep it reading as intentional rather than muddy or accidentally American. This Make-Over focuses on identifying where your current habits sit, and shaping them into a light, non-American, vaguely British accent that works for fantasy worlds where realism isn’t the goal, but coherence and “getting the right vibe” are.
